Write your video title, description and tags. Tags go in as a comma list and are counted with YouTube's own rule for commas and spaces.
Separate tags with commas. Commas count, and a tag with a space adds 2.
| Field | Limit | Source | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|
| Title | 100 characters | YouTube Help | Checked October 2026 |
| Description | 5,000 characters | YouTube Help | Checked October 2026 |
| Tags (all together) | 500 characters | YouTube Data API: videos | Checked October 2026 |
A YouTube video title can be up to 100 characters, per YouTube Help.
Up to 5,000 characters. The YouTube Data API states the limit as 5,000 bytes, so text in scripts that use more bytes per character (such as Hindi or Chinese) can hit the limit sooner.
All tags together can use up to 500 characters. The commas between tags count, and a tag that contains a space counts as if it were wrapped in quotes, so it uses 2 extra characters. This counter applies the same rule.
Not always. Long titles get cut on small screens and in suggested videos, so put the words that matter most at the start.
